Student Innovation Contest- 2014 (Part 2)

GCT

This year’s Student Innovation Contest organised by SRF fetched good response with students across various departments participating in it. Fourteen Projects were shortlisted for the final presentation. Student Journalist Council (SJC)  gave a glimpse of seven projects in its previous post. The remaining projects are discussed here.

Use of supporting wheels for four wheelers

Ram Niveth K.I, Rajarathinam.M, Keerthana Kannan, Mathiarasan.S – Production Engineering

What does the project topic mean?

It means use of supporting wheels to prevent accidents due to tyre burst.

On what principle does it work?

The high pressure inside the tyres leads to sudden bursts. The vehicle then tilts and changes the center of gravity of the vehicle . This ends up in accidents ultimately. So our project is mainly based on avoiding this.

How does the supporting wheels work?

A pressure sensor is fitted to each of the wheels . It sends signals to a PL when critical pressure levels are reached. This engages the supporting wheels.

How is this advantageous from other prevailing systems for safety?

The supporting wheels come into action when any of the tires burst hence provides a balancing support for the driver preventing accidents .

Would this mechanism be commercially successful?

People preferring economical cars cannot enjoy this facility. Those who go for cars with safety provisions would be benefited.

Password Encryption Database

N. Harsha Vardhan, Siddharthan.SS, Vignesh .U , Ashwin.S – Computer Science Engineering

What is a password encrypted database?

It is an application for PC, used for protecting the passwords. The passwords are secured using encryption.

How does the application work?

This program is executed in C++ language. First a master password has to be set which will get stored in an encrypted form. After logging in there are three options, one is to insert data , the other is to read the existing data and the third one is to quit. For inserting data, the user has to enter the passwords for the respective accounts . In the read option the account names and the passwords would be displayed in decrypted form. The final process is used to launch the Web pages.

In what way is this beneficial?

Nowadays people have several accounts. This application would help to remember the passwords for the respective accounts. The passwords cannot be easily hacked because they are save in encrypted form. Passwords can be kept highly secured.

Bio-electricity using Melanin

Shobana.M, Yogeswari.R – Industrial Biotechnology

What is melanin?

Melanin is a pigment produced by living beings to protect themselves from harmful radiations.

What is the principle behind the project?

When melanin gets irradiated by radiations it exhibits higher extrinsic transfer properties. Also melanin is able to produce stable radicals on oxidation. It can act as a continuous supplier of electrons. Hence melanin can be used to produce electricity.

Where does this type of electricity find its application?

In polar regions where there lots of cosmic radiation this type of electricity produce ionising benefits. Also in the outer space the cosmic rays can be made use to produce electricity.

Efficycle

Sasidharan.M , Harish Kumar. T, Sabarisenan. S , Raja. R, Prabhu. V – Mechanical Engineering

M, Jayaram. S, Veluchamy. S, Prathap. P, Rajakumar. S  Praveenraj . B, – Production Engineering

What is meant by Efficycle ?

It’s an efficient cycle. It is an innovative step to replace IC Engine powered vehicles.  It runs on both human power and electric power.

What is the purpose of this efficient cycle?

This green vehicle serves the purpose of providing a pollution free environment.  It uses manual power and electric power hence cutting the usage of fuel. It can be used to carry agricultural products , industrial surveys , site visiting and short distance travel.

What was the reason behind building this green vehicle?

The society of automotive engineers (SAE) conducts events encouraging students to innovate. One such competition is Efficycle. This project green vehicle was built for SAE event.

Can this green vehicle be commercialized?

Obviously. In North India these type of vehicles are a huge success. It is yet to hit the southern parts of India.

LIM Powered Movers

Kishore, S. Karthik, Prasanth, P.S Mohamed Tharick- Production Engineering

What are LIM powered movers?

It means linear induction motor. The motor is  linear and not rotary.

How does it work?

It works on the same principle as rotary squirrel cage induction motor.

It does not rotate , instead it exerts a kinetic force in a straight line or a guide way. One part of the linear motor is mounted on the vehicle and the other on the guide way.

In what way they are beneficial?

They are direct drives , they allow acceleration,  velocity and positional accuracy better than the rotary counterparts.

Applications?

They can be used in machine tools, material handling and storage , accelerators and launchers, low and medium speed trains and sliding door operations.

Alkaloids as potent Inhibitor of Microbiologically Induced Corrosion

Sasikala Devi, N. Monica – Industrial Bio Technology

What is the scope of your project?

If the project is implemented it will help to prevent corrosion of industrial piping system and machinery caused by micro organisms.

What is microbiologically Induced Corrosion (MIC), and how does it occur?

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a great threat to machinery. It is influenced by microbial consortia that consist of heterogeneous species. These microbes are capable of forming bio-films inside the pipes under adverse conditions. The main microbe is ‘pseudomonas aeruginosa’ which is found in most bio-films.

What is your innovation?

Our idea is to use an innovative and feasible method other than the prevailing  conventional methods. Alkaloids of Galinsoga quadriradiata is extracted and used for bio-films treatment. It’s a weed and hence cuts the cost of treatment.

What is the methodology adopted?

‘Pseudomonas aeruginosa’ is cultured and treated with crude leaf extracts of ‘Galinsoga quadriradiata’. The recurrence of the bio-films is analysed by measuring the thickness with and without the treatment. Also the rate of recurrence and effectiveness of the leaf extract is determined against the most commonly used ‘glutaraldehyde’.

 Power Generation from Moving Vehicles

Anushamary. D , T. Dhinesh, M.A. Sankaran, K. Parthipan – Computer Science Engineering

What is the principle behind the working of the project?

It uses the wind generated by fast moving vehicles like buses and trains to generate electricity.

How does it work?

Fans are attached to the top and sides of the vehicle. Power is generated in the same way as in windmills. The generated power is stored in battery for later usage.
