GCT badminton team secures third place: Dawn of a New Era

The Zonal level badminton tournament was hosted in SNS college on 19th September 2025 where many colleges participated enthusiastically. GCT's Badminton team patronized by the Principal of GCT, Dr.K. Manonmani, with professors S.Bradeesh Moorthy, AP/Mech and Dr.R.Sakthivel, AP/Mech as advisors took part in this event. Harshavardhan (MECH' 26), Jeeva (CIVIL' 27), Acumen (EIE' 27), Balavignesh (CIVIL' 27), Manikandan (CSE' 27), Santhosh (MECH' 28) represented GCT’s badminton team under the co-captaincy of Harshavardhan and Jenat (EIE’ 26).

Throughout this event, the team delivered a commendable performance. In the first match, they faced Anna University Regional Campus and registered a convincing 3-0 victory. In the next round which would decide the finalist, GCT faced Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College (SREC). Despite efforts, the team lost 0-3 to SREC, missing a spot in the finals.

However, the team bounced back in the next match for 3rd and 4th place against SNS College, holding the spirit. As the scores leveled after three sets, the match was taken to a nail-biting tie-breaker set. In this decisive doubles, Manikandan and Balavignesh displayed exceptional teamwork and coordination, making GCT to clinch the 3rd prize. This zonal victory is particularly seen special because this is the first time GCT’s badminton team has secured the 3rd place at the Zonal level

“Though we narrowly missed the finals, our spirits never wavered,” said the winning captain Harshavardhan. Also, “this victory washed away the pain and sealed this moment in all our memories,” he added emotionally.

When we spoke with Manikandan, “The semi-final loss was tough; we were all silent for a while, none of us wanted to end our journey that way, and we gave our all in the next match,” he said. “My heart raced with every shot. When Balavignesh and I scored that winning point, the whole team ran onto the court and that moment I’ll never forget.”

“Everyone’s eyes were filled with tears of joy because finally, all our efforts paid off, we won 3rd place in the zonal for the first time!!” exclaimed Balavignesh joyfully. “We proudly dedicate this success to Santhosh Anna and Priya Akka for their continuous encouragement and guidance,” he went on.

This triumph, undeniably sets a new milestone for the GCT badminton team.
